Proverbs 3:5-6

Verse of the Day: Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6

This is a crucial verse to practice on a moment-by-moment basis.  The question it brings up is, do you trust in God regarding everything?  And if you say yes, the next question is, are there times when you revert to trusting yourself or anything else besides God?

God knows all things, understands all situations, knows the end from the beginning, has only our best in mind.  He loves us with an everlasting love, He never leaves our side, in fact, as Christians he is in us by way of the Holy Spirit.  He is everywhere throughout the entire universe at once, so there is no place we can go where God is absent.  Moreover, He can speak and interact with everyone and everything at the same time.  Can you say the same about anyone or anything else?  I cannot, and I would guess you cannot either.

This is the reason Solomon said that we must trust God with our whole heart and not trust in ours or any other’s judgement or advise.  If we do, then He will guide and lead us where He knows it is best for us and others.   To trust another is not wisdom and shows a lack of knowledge of the reality of God and His great and eternal love.

Jeremiah 17:7

Verse of the Day: Jeremiah 17:7

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD.” – Jeremiah 17:7

There are many things that we place our trust in.  Sometimes we trust other men to bring us through trials.  Other times we trust the law to bring about appropriate compensation for a wrong done.  And of course, there are times when we rely on ourselves.  Also, there are many who create their own gods and place their trust in them.  The problem with placing our trust in any man or man-made solution, such as a false god, is that we cannot always trust that the solution will work.

In today’s verse, the truth is that placing your trust in God will be a blessing to you.  You see, in the verses 1-4, God convicts the Jews of the sin of idolatry and shows them that any confidence in these idols will not be good.  Let us look at the next two verses.  “Thus says the LORD: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD.  He is like a shrub in the desert and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land.”  Jeremiah 17:5-6 He now says that anyone who trusts man aside from God has placed his trust in the wrong things.

The idea here is that we are to understand that God is to be who we trust.  He will never fail us, even when it looks like things are going all wrong.  He will never let us down or cause us to wander aimlessly for a solution.  As the writer of Proverbs said, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.”  Proverbs 3:5-6.  Acknowledge that the one you trust in any situation is God, and you will be guided straight to where He wants you.  And that place is God’s best for you.

Isaiah 26:4

Verse of the Day Devotion.  Isaiah 26:4

“Trust in the LORD forever, For in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock.” – Isaiah 26:4

This verse, along with the one prior to it speak of focusing our minds on God regarding all things. In verse one we see this is a song that was sung in Judah upon the return of the people from Babylon to Judah. “In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city; He sets up walls and ramparts for security.” Isaiah 26:1. The idea that they have a strong city does not refer to the fortification that was around the city, for this was essentially brought down when they were overtaken by their enemies. The idea here is that God will be that wall of protection. He will himself be the defender of his people in the place of walls. Then in verse two, “Open the gates, that the righteous nation may enter, The one that remains faithful.” Isaiah 26:2, This is a cry to open the gates to allow Israel, the people who remained true to God throughout their time in Babylon, that they may enter into the land given to them by God.

Then in verse three we find this very true and powerful verse, “The steadfast of mind Thou wilt keep in perfect peace, Because he trusts in Thee.” This confidently states that certain people will have perfect peace. This indicates that some have a frame of mind and perspective that is steadfast, which implies an undeviating commitment to a purpose, conviction, or person. The root meaning of the translation steadfast is to support, but the Hebrew passive participle carries the idea of “leaning on, depending on, resting on” something. In this case, it refers to leaning on, depending on, and resting on God.

Now to our focus verse. “Trust in the LORD forever, For in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock.” Isaiah 26:4. The author first states in the previous verse that those who trust in the Lord will have perfect peace. Now He takes it a step further by telling them ‘to’ trust in the Lord ‘forever’. Not simply to trust Him in some things, or to only trust Him at times when they struggle trusting themselves or something or someone else, But to trust Him forever. Now let’s look at something else in this verse which is also intriguing. ‘Trust in the LORD forever, for in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock’. The word translated ‘Lord’ in both instances is the Hebrew word “yehôvâh” which means self-Existent or eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God: – Jehovah, the Lord. Now, the word translated ‘God’ is the Hebrew word ‘yâhh’ which is a contracted form of yehôvâh meaning essentially the same thing. Now, I say this to say that the threefold use of Jehovah denotes exactly which God they should rely on, for the name “yehôvâh” is used three times in the sentence and not just a generic term for any god.

It is so important that we do not rely on people, things, organizations, or anything else to provide the peace we so need in the place of Jehovah, the true God. We are facing trials on every corner; hatred from many who deny Jehovah even exists, and persecution from those who want to destroy the idea of Christianity altogether. It does not matter what they do or say for the true God, stated here as “yehôvâh” can be trusted no matter what. If this is so, the exhortation to trust God makes sense, for God is like a solid rock that is eternally stable and unmovable. If we want to find peace that will truly last forever, Yahweh, the God of Israel, is a stable and reliable source to depend on. Remember what the writer of Hebrews said. “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you. So we can confidently say, The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” Hebrews 13:5-6. If He will never leave of forsake us, we can absolutely place our complete trust in Him.

Psalm 62:8

Verse of the Day Devotion: Psalm 62:8

“Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.” – Psalm 62:8

Who do we trust in this life?  Who do we go to first in difficult times?  We all know people who help us when difficult times come.  It could be family or friends, or an agency that specializes in what we are struggling with.  It is good to seek help from good people we know and trust.  However, the first place we should go is to the one who can help us no matter the situation, who knows everything about us, past, present, and future.  And the one who loves us more than anyone else could ever love us.  And that person is our Almighty God.

King David saw Him as that one person who He went to in times of trouble.  “My soul waits in silence for God only; From Him is my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken.” Psalm 62:1-2.  David here is expressing his absolute trust and confidence in God.  He waits patiently for Him, the one who has promised him salvation from all trials.  He understands that by placing his trust in God, he will not be greatly shaken.  Notice the word greatly in verse two.  He may feel some consternation due to what the enemy does, however he trusts that no matter what happens, he is never alone.

He then calls out his enemies.  “How long will you assail a man, That you may murder him, all of you, Like a leaning wall, like a tottering fence? They have counseled only to thrust him down from his high position; They delight in falsehood; They bless with their mouth, But inwardly they curse. Selah.” Psalm 62:3-4.  How long will you come against me in your hatred?  You are ready to destroy others, however, in this you will be destroyed.  His faith was strong in the protection of God.  Then he declares that no matter what happens, it is only God he will go to.  “My soul; wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.  On God my salvation and my glory rest; The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God.” Psalm 62:5-7.  David makes it very clear that his trust lies completely in the Lord.  He will only place his trust in Him, for no one else can provide the safety and peace he needs and desires.  Note the end of verse six.  ‘I shall not be shaken’.  See the difference in this and verse 2.

Then he calls out to those who may read this.  “Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.” Psalm 62:8. He tells his readers that it is imperative that they trust fully in God no matter the situation they find themselves in.  And not just at certain times, but in all times.  And tell Him everything, hold nothing back.  He knows everything about everything, but you show your trust by giving Him everything.

I want to encourage everyone reading this to do as David did, to wait in silence on God to work on your behalf.  We must trust in Him completely, for He is our rock and our salvation.  Be patient and meditate on His goodness and love, as well as His promise that He will never leave or forsake us.  I also want to remind everybody what my favorite verse in the scriptures, and it is extremely relevant in all situations. “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28. He has promised this for us, and He always keeps His promises.  Be at peace, for He is our Prince of Peace, and this is His desire for us.

Psalm 56:3

Verse of the Day Devotion: Psalm 56:3

“When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You.” – Psalm 56:3

This psalm of David addresses a time when Israel was at war with the Philistines.  As this conflict was going on, things must have been becoming more difficult.  He starts by calling out to God for assistance.  “Be gracious to me, O God, for man has trampled upon me; Fighting all day long he oppresses me. My foes have trampled upon me all day long, For they are many who fight proudly against me.”  Psalm 56:1-2.  David and his soldiers were fighting an army that was large, much larger it appears than Israel’s.  The idea put forth here was that people came at them from everywhere with open mouths.  There were so many that there was no break in the action.  Whenever they were able to address one group, another came right after.   David felt as though they were pressing hard upon him and there seemed no protection or security was to be found.  It looks like David, during this battle, feared for his life.

However, in our focus verse, He declares a truth that we all truly need to understand and remember during our own difficult times.  “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You.” Psalm 56:3.  Like us, David experienced times where he was afraid.  He did not try to hide it but was honest and expressed it openly to God.  And who better to trust in times where fear has grasped us?  Who else knows everything that will happen before it does?  Who else is all powerful and can defeat any foe that can come against us, including Satan himself?  Who else knows our every need and is able to meet these abundantly?  He declared the following in an earlier chapter that fits with this idea.  “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, And I am saved from my enemies.” Psalm 18:2-3.  David was afraid on multiple occasions.  But he also trusted completely in Him to bring Him through safely.  “In God, whose word I praise, In God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to me?”  Psalm 56:4

This is the secret to peace in the midst of storms.  There are so many things in this world that can make this life miserable, especially in this time what with all the uncertainty that abounds.  However, what we must always understand is that uncertainty affects only us.  There is never any uncertainty with God.  He knows the end from the beginning.  There is no time where something happens to us and God is surprised.  In fact, there is nothing we can do either that will surprise Him.  Therefore, along with the truth that He is all powerful, we can place all our trust in Him that He is always in control.  Give Him everything and leave it there.  Do not take it back.

And in conclusion, in these things that trouble us, when we give it to God, we must not think about them.  We do what we can and then live our lives trusting and depending completely on God.  “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything, worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” Philippians 4:6-8
